Your Job Transition to the AI Era: A 5-Step Action Plan
The rise of generative AI is reshaping the workplace. With advances from companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic, AI is increasingly capable of automating complex tasks. It’s only a matter of time before AI becomes an integral part of many jobs.
Here is one of many recent announcements that are likely to shake up the industry soon.
But don’t worry! Even if you’re not super tech-savvy, there are lots of ways you can get up to speed and be a winner in a new world shaped by AI.
Here is what you can do today:
#1. Analyse your daily tasks
Keep a detailed log: For a week or two, document all your tasks and the time you spend on each one. You don’t have to share this information with anyone, keep it to yourself. But be careful and be honest, because this could be the basis for any future optimisation you can achieve with AI.
Identify time-consuming activities: Write down tasks that take a lot of time, even if there’s no AI solution yet.
#2. Be aware of the potential for automation
Research AI capabilities: Learn about AI tools that could automate your time-consuming tasks in your domain. There are a lot of tools out there and a lot of news. But not every advancement is relevant to your domain (although a vertical solution may develop over time).
Assess the value of automation: Focus on tasks that would significantly free up your time or improve efficiency.
Reflect on enjoyment: Identify which tasks you enjoy doing and which you wouldn’t mind automating. In my experience, there are some tasks (e.g. problem solving, blogging, etc.) that people really enjoy doing, even if they are highly inefficient compared to computers, but if those tasks don’t cost that much and you enjoy doing them, it may be worth deliberately neglecting them. At the end of the day, it is your personal growth and well-being that matters, not just efficiency.
#3. Understand industry trends in AI
Learn from others: Gain insights and perspectives on how AI is impacting your field. There are a lot of meetups and forms and groups that talk about the AI space for specific domains, they might be a good place to start. Because they speak the same language and know what problems are worth solving and may already have a solution.
