3 Things I love about GenAI

ChatGPT & Co. have changed our lives at an unprecedented rate that no one could have predicted, and we haven’t even started yet. For many people like me, AI is exciting, but at the same time it can be overwhelming because of how quickly things are changing, with new players coming and going, redefining and disrupting everything we got used to a week or a month ago.

Despite the vast landscape of GenAI, if we take a 1,000-foot view, I find these three things most fascinating about GenAI.

Perspective #1. Personalization

Before GenAI and ChatGPT, when we searched for information (like blogs or reading a long piece of text), we usually had some intention or things that were really important to us. Other parts of the text might not be important to us, or might just be filler words or whatever.

With GenAI, we can now extract the interesting parts of the information we really care about by

  • summarising
  • asking questions
  • translating

This revolution can save us an insane lot of time and money. Of course, we still have the problem of bias and relying on AI’s pick-and-choose mechanisms, but that’s another story:)

Perspective #2. Creation

Imagine this: you have a great idea in your head, like a picture or an idea for an application, and you want to make it happen.

How would you bring this idea to life without AI?

You probably would:

  • Try to put that idea into words so that someone can read what is going on in your head
  • Find someone who can actually interpret your words and make whatever you have in mind — the app, the piece of art, or even code or whatever.

Many things in our world are built this way: people who have the vision (like business leaders) come together with people who have the skills (like programmers) to create great things. Of course, these roles could all be in one person. But you get my point.

And with GenAI, things are starting to change.

Now, creators can use LLMs instead of going to skilled people to make their ideas a reality. This means that more people will be able to make their dreams come true without having to find skilled people or make big investments that they may not have or be willing to make. They can produce more in less time (with all the pros and cons of course).

Perspective #3. Transparency

Information is everywhere and it is not getting any less. In the last two years or so, we have produced as much information as all the digital information put together before.

Not only does this make it super difficult to find what we want, but it makes it even easier to “hide” information behind long paragraphs and thousands of pages, like T & C privacy statements or just about any contract.

But with GenAI, we can gain deep insight into massive amounts of text, making fraud and opacity more difficult than ever. Technically, it will be even harder for a company to hide behind lengthy terms and conditions or contracts, because the processing of these massive amounts of text will be outsourced from the limited human brain to an almost unlimited technical brain, capable of processing this information in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost.

I am sure there are many more nuances and perspectives on how GenAI will shape our future. What matters is how we use this incredible technology to help us understand and create a better world.
