I Fixed Every UX Problem I Had With Claude Code. One Feature Did It

Vibe coding with Claude Code is pretty great these days. It writes the app, starts the dev server, hands back the links.

But the tool itself was off-limits. Buried links, no status, vanished URLs: I just had to live with them. That ended this fall. On September 3, 2026, a feature request asked for mods; on October 1 came the post I was waiting for: "We're live!" (github.com)

Mods can draw panes beside the chat, react to tool calls, rewrite prompts. The thread became a gallery: a docked table of contents with search and a minimap (lkangd/cc-mods), a pixel-art Claude with 73 scenes (mesix971/mods-claude), the chat reskinned as iMessage, MSN, AIM or IRC (hg913488/claude-code-retro-skins). And many more.

Grid titled 'Real mods people built · Oct 2026' with six cards: chat-toc, a docked table of contents with search and minimap; Usage gauges in the prompt footer; Pixpal, a pixel-art companion above the prompt; Clawd, a pixel-art Claude reacting to tool calls; Retro Chat, reskinning chat as iMessage, MSN, AIM or IRC; and Security & audit suites that inspect every tool call.

One thread, six mods: a docked TOC, usage gauges, pixel pets, retro skins and full audit suites.

Claude Code didn't fix its UX problems; it shipped the feature that lets me fix them. Mine is one example: a side dashboard keeping the last 10 links Claude hands me in view.

The four problems, before the fix

  • Delivered links scroll away. Every file, image and URL Claude hands me is buried in reply text. Two answers later, it's unfindable.
  • There is no glanceable state. Running, waiting for me, done, or something still working in the background? Scroll up and guess. More than once I watched it declare the run finished while it was very much still working.
  • Dev-server URLs vanish. The localhost link to the app I'm building is the one link I need all day, and it's gone after the next reply.
  • "Remember this" gets remembered nowhere. Ask Claude to keep a note and it becomes part of a chat I can't see anymore.

So what does a fix look like when the tool finally lets you build one yourself?
